Tradition and Innovation in Maximos Planoudes’ Works on Grammar and Syntax
Theofanis Tsiampokalos studied Classical Philology (BA, MA, PhD) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Zurich, and the Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg. He completed a postdoc at the University of Trier and in February 2023 he joins forces with the MELA team at the University of Ghent. His research interests include rhetoric and philosophy in Greece and Rome, Plutarch, literature theory as well as the reception and textual transmission of presocratic philosophy.
While in Ghent, he will be focusing on the structures of Maximos Planoudes’ works on grammar and syntax. This is a topic that has recently captivated his interest. The aim of this project will be, on the one hand, to find out how the grammatical rules that one could learn about the Greek language are organized within Planudes’ surviving textbooks, and on the other hand, to analyze and evaluate these rules in their immediate language historical and reception-aesthetic contexts, with a particular emphasis on the aspect of ‘information management’.
